Monuments by Moonlight trolley tour review
My verdict: book this one second, after you have already walked the Mall in daylight, because it is the tour that repays a tired day rather than replacing it. Two and a half hours on a trolley with a live guide, thirty minutes on the ground at the Lincoln, Vietnam Veterans and Korean War memorials, and another thirty at the FDR and MLK memorials on the Tidal Basin. It is the wrong tour if the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the White House or the Capitol is on your list of things to stand in front of, because the trolley passes all four without stopping. It is also wrong if you were counting on the Iwo Jima photo stop, which the operator is currently skipping because of a bridge closure, and wrong if you want the walk itself, which is covered in the Mall after dark.
Where it stops and where it does not
The structure matters more than the itinerary list, so here it is plainly. You get thirty minutes off the trolley at the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial, which sit within a few minutes of each other at the west end. You then get thirty minutes off at the FDR Memorial and the MLK Memorial round the Tidal Basin. That is an hour on your feet out of two and a half hours, and it is spent at five of the memorials that reward the dark most.
Passed without stopping: the White House, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian museums and the WWII Memorial. That is not a criticism, it is the deal. A trolley that stopped everywhere would take all evening. But if you book expecting to stand at the foot of the obelisk, you will be annoyed, and the fix is either the cart tour or a daylight walk from the things-to-see list.
Two meeting points, the DC Welcome Center or Union Station, so pick whichever your hotel is nearer. Hotel pickup, food and drinks are not included.
