Is the National Mall worth visiting?

Yes, with one condition: go in knowing it is a two-mile outdoor park, not a compact attraction. The Mall is free, open 24 hours a day, 1.9 miles end to end, and about 24 million people a year come through it. The visitors I met who left disappointed were almost never disappointed by the memorials. They were disappointed by the distance, the sun and the assumption that it would all be within a block of each other.

What you actually get for nothing

You get 309.2 acres between the Grant Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, laid out as one long axis with the Washington Monument in the middle. On it: the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans and Vietnam Veterans memorials, the World War II Memorial, the Smithsonian Castle and eleven free Smithsonian museums, the Grant Memorial and the Capitol steps. A short walk off it, around the Tidal Basin, are the Jefferson, FDR and Martin Luther King Jr memorials. None of that charges admission. What surprises people who expected a monument checklist is how much of the Mall is simply a working public park. Softball leagues on the panels in summer, protest marches, kite flyers near the Monument, government staff eating lunch on the grass. I liked telling visitors that: it is not a museum piece, it is used.

Who I would tell to go, and who I would not

Go if you have half a day, decent shoes, and any interest at all in why the country puts its arguments in stone. Go especially if you can be at the Lincoln Memorial before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., when the crowds thin out and the marble does something different with the light. I have stood there at 6 a.m. and at 11 p.m. and both are better than 2 p.m. in July.

Think twice if your whole day is four hours in the middle of a hot afternoon with small children and no plan for covering the ground. That is the combination that produces the one-star trip. The fix is not to skip the Mall — it is to shorten your own walking, either by choosing one end or by handing the distance to something with wheels.

Is a paid tour worth it when the Mall is free?

Sometimes. Nothing you pay for buys entry here, so what you are buying is either distance or context. A guide is worth money if you want to know why the Vietnam Wall is black granite and cut into the ground rather than raised, and the cheapest way to get one is the $25 two-hour guided walk — though it holds only 13 reviews so far, so read the rating as encouraging rather than proven.
