The National Mall at night
I have stood at the Lincoln Memorial at 6 a.m. and at 11 p.m., and the late one wins. The chamber is floodlit, the sound carries differently, and you can read the Gettysburg Address off the north wall with nobody at your shoulder. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is the other one that changes after dark, because the figures are lit from below and stop looking like statues.
Two practical points. The museums are shut, so an evening on the Mall is memorials only. And the Mall does not close but Metrorail is not a 24-hour system, so check your last train on wmata.com before you walk 1.9 miles west at 10 p.m. Since the DC Circulator stopped running on 31 December 2024 there is no shuttle along the Mall to save you, which is covered on getting around the Mall.
Walk east to west after dark. You finish at the Lincoln Memorial with the lit Washington Monument behind you in every photograph, rather than starting with the best thing and trailing away from it.
If you would rather be driven between the lit memorials than walk between them, the nighttime trolley is $59.95 for two and a half hours: 30 minutes off at the Lincoln, Vietnam Veterans and Korean War memorials, another 30 at the FDR and MLK memorials, and a pass by the White House, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial and Capitol Hill without stopping. Can you visit the National Mall at night?
Yes. NPS keeps the sites open 24 hours a day and the memorials stay open and lit after dark. Rangers are on duty until 10:00 p.m.; after that the memorials are open, lit and unstaffed. There is no admission charge at any hour.
How late can you visit the Lincoln Memorial?
There is no closing time — the memorial stays open and lit through the night, though staff finish at 10:00 p.m. I would rather be there at 11 p.m. than at 2 p.m. The catch is getting home afterwards: see getting around the Mall.
Are the museums open at night on the National Mall?
No. The Smithsonian buildings keep their own daytime hours — the National Air and Space Museum in DC, for instance, opens 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — so an evening out here is memorials only. Plan the free museums for the middle of the day: the free museums.
