The best time to visit the National Mall

By hour: before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m. The Mall is open 24 hours a day, the memorials stay open and lit after dark, and rangers are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. By season: spring and autumn, with cherry blossom peak bloom typically late March to early April. Summer is the hard one, because there is very little shade on the grass panels. The museums keep their own hours, so if a museum is the point, build the day around it and not around the light.

The hours, in order of how good they are

Dawn to 8 a.m. The best hour on the Mall, and the one almost nobody uses. I have been at the Lincoln Memorial at 6 a.m. more times than I can count, and the chamber is nearly empty, the marble is cool, and the Reflecting Pool actually reflects because the water is still. Nothing is staffed yet, so bring your questions for later.

9:30 a.m. to noon. Rangers come on duty at 9:30. If you want the interpretive side — the talks, the questions, the person who knows which panel of the Wall holds which year — this is the window, and it costs nothing.

Noon to 4 p.m. The busiest and, in summer, the hardest. This is when the lack of shade on the grass panels tells. If you are out here then, walk the elm rows along the sides or go indoors: the museums are free, which makes them the cheapest shade in Washington.

8 p.m. to 10 p.m. My favourite stretch. The memorials are lit, the crowds have thinned, rangers are still on until 10, and the temperature is bearable. After 10 the memorials stay open and lit but unstaffed. More on the Mall after dark.

Season by season

Spring. The obvious answer, and busy for good reason. Cherry blossom peak bloom is typically late March to early April. NPS publishes a forecast each spring and I am not going to guess at a date here — check nps.gov when you are booking flights, not before.
Summer. Hot, and the grass panels have almost no shade. Do the memorials early or late and the museums in the middle of the day. This is the season where handing the distance to something with wheels earns its money.
Autumn. Quietly the best. The crowds fall away after Labor Day, the light is long, and the elm rows turn.
Winter. Thin crowds and clear views down the axis. Note that the Washington Monument closes one day in the first week of every month for maintenance, and on Independence Day and Christmas Day, and for high wind and thunderstorms.

Insider tip

If cherry blossom season is the reason you are coming, book the accommodation and leave the sightseeing loose. Peak bloom is a range, not a date, and the crowds around the Tidal Basin in that window make the walk slower than the mileage suggests.

Building a day around the museums

The Mall never closes but the buildings do. The National Air and Space Museum in DC opens 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and requires a free timed-entry pass, so if that museum matters, its pass is the fixed point in your day and everything else moves around it. If you take one paid thing out here, taking it after dark makes the most of the day: you keep daylight for the museums and walking, and the lit memorials for the tour.
