Is the National Mall safe?

It is a working national park with staff on it most of the day. Rangers are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, and the Mall itself is open 24 hours, so the memorials stay open and lit after 10 but unstaffed. I am not going to quote you crime figures I have not verified. What I will tell you, from nine summers working out here, is that the things that actually go wrong for visitors are heat, distance, water and being at the wrong end of 1.9 miles after dark with no plan for getting back.

The practical version: carry water, keep to the lit paths and the busier stretches once the rangers go off duty, and work out before you set off how you are getting home from whichever end you finish at. That last one is the real planning problem out here, because Metrorail serves the edges of the Mall rather than the middle and there is no shuttle along it any more. Insider tip

If you are out here alone late, the west end is the one I would pick. The Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam and Korean War memorials keep a steady trickle of visitors long after the museum row has emptied out.

Between 8 and 10 p.m. is both the pleasantest stretch and the busiest late window, which is why guided evening tours run then.
