Bike tours of the National Mall

The 1.9 miles everyone quotes is only the Mall proper, Capitol steps to Lincoln Memorial. Add the Tidal Basin, which is where the Jefferson, FDR and MLK memorials are, and a real day on foot comes closer to four miles. That is the number worth holding onto here, because four miles is roughly what this tour rides — the full west loop, in three hours, without your feet doing the work. The arithmetic behind it is on how long it takes to walk the Mall.
Four flat miles in three hours
Flat is the operative word. Washington between the Capitol and the river has no hill worth the name, and the paths along the Mall and around the Tidal Basin are wide and paved. This is not a fitness ride. It is the fastest way to see the memorials without a motor, and at 4.8 from 419 reviews it is the highest-rated of the six tours on this site.
Usually included
- A Cannondale comfort bike
- A helmet
- A guide for three hours
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Gratuities
Worth knowing before you book
- Not suitable for pregnant women
- You need to be comfortable riding for three hours
- Three hours in the open air, so water and a hat in summer
Hotel pickup is the quiet win
Of the six products here, this is the only one that comes to get you and takes you back. That used to matter less. When the DC Circulator ran, you could reach the Mall cheaply from a lot of the city; its service ended on 31 December 2024 with no dedicated Metrobus replacement on the Mall route, and Metrorail only serves the edges. Pickup and drop-off quietly removes two legs of travel from your day. If you are working out the rest of them, see getting around the National Mall.
What the reviewers say
Jane, from New Zealand, wrote that “our bikes were of a high standard. Our guide Greg was awesome, very knowledgeable and accommodating.” Kat said “Marcus is the best guide ever. A great storyteller, good at checking the group,” and checking the group is the skill that matters most when a line of riders has to cross a road together. Romana, from Austria: “I had a fantastic tour with Joe.” Julie, from the UK, put it plainly: “As an American History fangirl I loved it.” Kristin called it “perfect way to see the monuments, burn off last night’s dinner, with a knowledgeable guide.” The full breakdown is in the monuments bike tour review.
What works
- About four miles covered, the widest reach of any single departure here
- Flat ground throughout, so it is not a fitness test
- Bike, helmet, hotel pickup, drop-off and gratuities all in the $65
- Highest rated of the six at 4.8 from 419 reviews
- Three hours is long enough to include the Tidal Basin memorials properly
Worth knowing
- Not suitable for pregnant women
- You have to be able to ride, which rules out some groups outright
- Three hours exposed — the grass panels have very little shade
- The dearest of the six at $65, though little gets added on the day
The shade on the Mall is in the elm rows along the sides, not out on the grass panels. On a July afternoon that matters more than any packing list; take water and start early.
If riding is not on, the two-hour electric cart tour at $49 covers most of the same ground with a motor doing the work. Every rung from $0 to $65 is laid out on the prices page.

Frequently asked questions
How far is the National Mall bike tour?
About four miles of flat ground over three hours, which is roughly the full west loop: the Mall plus the Tidal Basin memorials. For comparison, the Mall alone is 1.9 miles end to end, and the guided walk covers a fraction of that on foot in two hours.
Does the bike tour include hotel pickup?
Yes, pickup and drop-off both. Gratuities, the Cannondale comfort bike, the helmet and the guide are also included, so $65 is close to the whole cost of the morning. That is unusual here: it is the only one of the six that collects you.
Who should not take the bike tour?
It is not suitable for pregnant women, and you need to be comfortable on a bike for three hours, including the road crossings between the Mall and the Tidal Basin. If either applies, the electric cart tour covers most of the same distance seated in two hours for $49.
What should I wear on a National Mall bike tour?
A helmet is provided. Beyond that, plan for three hours in the open with very little shade — the elm rows along the sides of the Mall are where the shade is, and you will be out on the paths. Water, a hat and sunscreen in summer; layers in the cool months. More on what to wear.
